What is Expected Value (EV)?
The average amount you win or lose per ticket over many plays. Positive = profit on average, negative = loss.
How are taxes applied?
Portugal default: 20% Imposto do Selo on prizes above 5,000€. Adjust the rate and threshold for your country.
How does Scratch Ticket mode work?
Enter the total tickets issued and for each prize tier enter the quantity and prize amount. Probability = quantity ÷ total tickets.
What does Return % mean?
The percentage of your bet you get back on average. A 70% return means for every €1 spent, you get back €0.70 on average. All Portuguese scratch tickets (Jogos Santa Casa) return exactly 70% pre-tax.
What is the Target Prize filter?
Enter a prize amount in the full table to see which game gives you the best probability of winning at least that amount per euro spent. Useful for comparing games when you have a specific goal.
How do lottery EV estimates work?
Lottery games (EuroMilhões, EuroDreams) have variable prizes that change per draw. We estimate EV using the official payout rate (50-52% of revenue). Fixed prizes (e.g. EuroDreams 1st/2nd/6th) are calculated exactly. The actual EV per draw may vary.
Why do some games show a higher return than others?
All scratch tickets return ~70% pre-tax, but post-tax returns differ because games with larger top prizes lose more to the 20% tax on prizes above €5,000. Games with smaller prizes (e.g. Slapshot, Roda das Cores) keep the full 70% since no prize exceeds the threshold.
Where does the data come from?
All scratch ticket data comes directly from the official Jogos Santa Casa prize tables (plano de prémios). Lottery odds are from the official EuroMilhões and EuroDreams regulations. Every game is verified to match the stated total prize pool.
