Studyist Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 31, 2026

Studyist ("the app") is an app from EERIE for planning what you are studying: cards of topics and tickboxes arranged on a board, with screenshots pinned beside them. Everything you write is kept on your own device. If you choose to create an account, a copy is also kept on a server we run, so your other devices show the same board.

What we collect

Nothing at all unless you create an account. Without an account the app never contacts us and we hold no data about you. If you do create one, we hold your email address, a scrambled form of your password, and a copy of your own board. There is no analytics, no telemetry and no tracking in either case.

Where your data lives

Your cards, the topics and lines on them, your notes, the pictures you paste or add, and your settings are stored on your device, in the app's own storage folder. Settings include the light or dark theme, the lettering and text size, the colours you have used, the board's zoom level and, if you use the optional AI feature, your chosen AI provider, model and API key.

Accounts

An account is optional and the app works fully without one. It exists so that signing in on another device brings your board with you. To create one you give an email address and pick a password.

Your password never leaves your device. The app scrambles it on your own machine first, and only the scrambled result is sent to us. What we keep is a further scrambled form of that, so the password itself cannot be worked out from anything we hold, by us or by anyone who obtained a copy of our records.

We keep your email address, that scrambled password, the date the account was made, whether the address has been confirmed, and an internal reference that ties the account to your saved board. We do not keep your name, your device details, your location, or your IP address.

Emails we send

We send email only to confirm your address when you sign up, and to send a code if you ask to reset your password. Both are six digit codes that stop working after fifteen minutes. We do not send newsletters, marketing or any other mail. These messages are sent through Resend, an email delivery service, which handles your address under its own privacy policy in order to deliver them.

Your board on the server

When you are signed in, the app keeps a copy of your board and the pictures on it on a server we run on Cloudflare, and stores the time each was last saved. That copy is encrypted before it is written, with a key held only by our service and never stored alongside the data, so the stored records are unreadable on their own. Your email address is not encrypted, because it has to be looked up when you sign in. This means we are able to decrypt your board; we do not do so except where it is necessary to run or repair the service.

Signing out on a device stops that device syncing and leaves your other devices working. It does not delete the copy on the server. Delete account, in Settings, removes your account and the copy of your board and pictures stored with it. Your board stays on your own device either way.

Free trial and unlocking the app

In the Mac App Store and App Store versions, Studyist offers a free trial and then a one-time purchase for permanent access. Both are handled by Apple's App Store, and the app asks the store whether you have started the trial and whether you have bought the unlock. We do not receive your name, your payment details or your Apple Account details, and no purchase information is sent to any server of ours. The Windows version is sold separately through the Microsoft Store and has no trial or in-app purchase.

Optional AI help

Studyist includes an optional "Ask AI" feature that is switched off until you set it up yourself. It is a "bring your own key" feature: you choose the AI provider and paste your own API key from that provider. EERIE does not operate an AI service, does not supply a key, and receives nothing from these requests.

When, and only when, you press Ask, the app sends the following directly from your device to the provider you selected: the question you typed, and, if you leave that box ticked, the cards you chose, meaning their names, the lines on them, their notes and which lines are ticked. Any follow-up message you type in the AI panel is sent to the same provider along with the earlier messages of that conversation.

The supported providers are Anthropic, OpenAI, Google Gemini, DeepSeek, and any other service you point the app at through the OpenAI-compatible option. Once your data reaches a provider it is handled under that provider's own privacy policy and terms, not this one. The app sends nothing to any AI provider until you have entered a key and pressed the button, and it never sends anything to EERIE.

Your API key is stored locally on your device so you do not have to paste it every time. It is sent only to the provider it belongs to, as part of the request. You can remove it at any time by clearing the field in Settings.

The usage readout

Under the app's name Studyist shows how much processor time and memory the app itself is using, and how much space its own files take up. These figures are measured on your device, shown on screen, and never sent anywhere. They can be switched off in Settings.

Network use

With no account signed in and no AI key entered, the app works fully offline and does not connect to any server. Connections are opened only when you sign up or sign in, while you are signed in and your board is being kept in step, when you press Ask in the AI panel, when the app checks your trial or purchase with the App Store, or when you choose to click a link such as the footer links, which opens that page in your default browser under that site's own privacy policy.

Exports

Exporting writes a Markdown file of your board to a location you choose. That file stays on your device and under your control. The app never uploads it.

What we don't collect

The app does not collect analytics, telemetry, usage data, or device information. It contains no third-party trackers, advertising SDKs, or analytics libraries. We do not sell or share your data with anyone, and we do not use it to build a profile of you.

Your rights

You can ask us for a copy of what we hold about your account, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it, by emailing the address below. You can also delete it yourself at any time with Delete account in Settings, which removes the email address, the scrambled password and the stored copy of your board and pictures. The copy on your own device is yours and is not affected.

Children's privacy

Studyist is not aimed at children and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Third-party distribution

If the app is obtained through the Microsoft Store, Apple App Store, or another platform, the respective platform may process data related to download, purchase, and licensing under their own policies. This policy describes only processing performed by the Studyist app itself.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this URL with a new "Last updated" date.
